This picturesque state has many temples and the landscape being mountainous offers a grreen and varied landscape puntuated by some of the largest waterfalls in India like that of Chitrakot, where the river Indravati plunges off a 100 foot horseshoe gorge. During the monsoon this water fall is nearly 1000 foot wide and has been compared to the famous Niagra falls.
In baster district you can visit the Bastar Palace at Jagdalpur, which is also a good jump of point for yet more waterfalls and the lakes at Ganga Munda and Dalpat Sagar.
The Jain shrine in Nagpura was established in 1995. Located on the banks of the Sheonath river, the campus houses temples, guest houses, a garden and Naturopathy and Yoga Centre. The entrance to the resplendent marble temple of Shri Parshwanath. Durg is the nearest town for visiting this Jain temple, it's also a good base for seeing the rather interesting Ganga Maiya Temple
at Jhalmala just 58 Kms from Durg. the story of this little temple is really rather quaint but I'll let you find it yourself!
The Kawardha Palace, is a relatively new palace built by Maharaj Dharamraj Singh in the 1930's and now doubles as a pleasant hotle in the hills.
TheLaxman Temple and Gandheswar Temple in, Sirpur
is an interesting site. One hour east of Raipur,it's one of the finest brick temples in India, in good condition, and characterized by exquisite carvings and precise construction, It also hosts some erotic carvings by the Sheshnaag.
A visit to a tribal village for a taste of life as it once was, is a must - an overnight stay can be arranged on special request.
The state also host some wonderful caves to explore like Kailash Gufa this underground cave, is about 40 km from Jagdalpur. 200 metres long, 35 meters wide and 55 metres deep. If you remember that stalactites and stalagmites are formed over the course of years, the huge pillars of the Kanger Caves will leave you speechless. There are also caves at Kutumsar Cave , Kanger Valley National Park and Dandak. Festivals are of course part and parcel of life as elsewhere in India, the Teeja Festival being just one of them
This festival is celebrated by married women - they pray for the welfare of their husbands. The custom is to perform this prayer at ther parents' home
Of course this kind of terrain lends itself to wildlife and the National Parks at Indravati (Dantewada), Kanger Ghati (Bastar) and Guru Ghasidas (Sarguj/Koriya). also beckon the wildlife enthouseast.
Major wildlife species include blue bull, Chinkara, black buck, Sambhar, Barking Deer, wild dog, wild boar, jackals, hyena, and crocodiles. Tigers are in the Kurandi reserve forest and in the Kanger Valley National Park. This varied and largely unexplored stae offer many many off the beaten track destinations and oif you love waterfalls, where else is there!
