Andhra Pradesh, is a little visited state by travelers to the Sub Continent, which is a shame as the state has much to offer the casual tourist, cuisine being just one of them! Temples, forts, wildlife all can be found in this coastal state. Visit The 1000-pillar temple and the Ramappa temple at Warangal. Or the Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala nestled amongst the Eastern Ghats with it's auspicious tank. Whilst in the area take a look at the natural geological arch of Sila Thoranam.
Visit Hyderabad affectionately known as cyberbad, to denote it's place amongst the software industries of modern India. Chock a block with museums and monuments, it is also THE place to eat Biryani.
Places of interest include Charminar (four minarets) which represents the heart of the city, or the sculpted white marble of the Birla Mandir, dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara, the shrine contains a replica of the idol seen at Tirumala.
The botanical gardens and and Lumbini park with it's syncronised fountain, offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of Indian cities and museums abound, the. Andhra Pradesh State Museum being just one of them.
For arts and crafts visit the Shilipgram crafts village.
Of course no visit to the city would be complete with seeing the famous fort of Golconda, The fort is famous for its acoustics, palaces, factories, ingenious water supply system and the famous Fateh Rahben gun, one of the cannons used in the last siege of Golconda by Aurangzeb.
For Indian film buffs, a visit to the Ramoji Film City is a must.
An hour and a half away Vijaypuri is the town for visiting, Nagarjunasagar, is a vast lake formed by the backed up waters of the Krishna River held back by a a hydro electric dam..
Other places of interest include Srisailam, for one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India. (natural stone formations in the shape of a linga) The Nagarjunasagar Wildlife sanctuary is also worth a visit.
Perhaps a sail along the Godavari River by steamer from Rajahmundry.
Perhaps your looking for some beach life well head for Visakhapatnam (Vizag). where you can find some at Rushikonda beach only 8 Km from Vizag. Or take a taxi to Bheemili on the mouth of the River Gosthani you'll find the remains here of a once thriving Dutch community.
Appikonda is famed for its black stone carved nandi, situated on the coast it's about 30 Km's from Vizag. You can see a community of toy makers at Etikoppaka and hours drive from Vizag these toys made from a local soft wood known as "Ankudu" have won the small community national recognition.
There are also several Buddhist sites of not within easy driving distance of Vizag, namely Thotlakonda, Bavikonda and Sankaram, though Gopalapatnam on the banks of River Tandava would also warrant a visit.
In Vizag itself you can promenade with the locals at R.K. Beach or take in the view from Kailasagiri Park, on a hill overlooking the town. For the kids there's Indira Gandhi Zoological Park. Andhra Pradesh Tourism organises city tours.
One of the most exquisitely sculpted shrines of Andhra Pradesh, Simhachalam temple is only 16 km from Vizag, set amongst thickly wooded hills.
Araku is a pleasant green Hill Station some 112 Kms west of Vizag and offers a welcome escape from the sometimes humid plains. The lush green surrounding valleys abound with streams and waterfalls and offer great walking. some place of interest would have to include the Tribal Museum and The Botanical Garden at Padmapuram.
On the way to Araku from Vizag drop in on the Borra caves, this cave formation is thought to have been carved by the Gosthani river and present a mind-boggling and breath-taking display of naturally sculpted rocks.
the caves are about 90 Kms from Vizag. Also along the way you can see Tyda a small village tucked away in the Eastern Ghats. This place offer great trekking and bird watching the AP tourism have established a camp here called Jungle Bells Nature Camp, an Eco-Tourism Resort.
Anantagiri is one of the highest points in Andhra Pradesh and offer cooll climates and walking. There are several waterfalls in the surrounding area. and the air is heavy with the smell of coffee.
All in all Andhra has something for everyone and remains an off beat destination. Give it some time on your itinerary. It will be time well spent I assure you.
